Sifuna Amanzi (We Need Water) is a social justice water campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the ongoing water shortages as a result of drought and poor water infrastructure in many impoverished and resource-deprived rural communities in the Eastern Cape. The province was declared a disaster area due to drought in 2019 by the provincial government, and while the declaration has since lapsed, many communities still go for months without accessing safe drinking water. Some parts of the province have not experienced heavy rain since 2014. So dire is the situation that in some rural communities, women, children and sick pensioners fetch water for drinking and cooking in contaminated river streams used by animals and livestock. Dam levels in some rural municipalities are nearing 0% capacity.

Through Sifuna Amanzi we aim to increase awareness of the need to value water and to use it sparingly.

We are using Sifuna Amanzi to bring to focus and to government’s attention the water issues affecting the Eastern Cape. Secondly we are hoping to build civic agency amongst those communities who have the same problems so they know they are not alone and that they have the right to demand clean running water from government.
